There's only one word for when tapping feet talk to jazz sax: CONVERSATION.  In one of his last performances before his death in September, 1990, innovative tap percussionist Steve Condos teams up with acclaimed tenor saxophonist Jay Corre to create a bold picture of the improvisational language between two true artists.  Spontaneous and unrehearsed, the music is in every style- from Latin to blues  to swing.  Even a Concerto for Sax and Taps.  A real collector's piece.   Long renowned as "the Man" of Tap, Steve Condos' intricate patterns created a completely new style of dance known as Tap Percussion.  His rhythmic feet took him from Vaudeville to the Big Bands to Broadway and around the world.  He has appeared in over 20 films, with greats such as Betty Grable, W.C. Fields and Sammy Davis, Jr., and has performed with legends like Woody Herman, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker.....

Jay Corre is a very solid musician.who has been in the big band sideman ranks for many years, a charter member of the Buddy Rich Big Band of the 60's and playing the LA. jazz club scene in the 50's. This album as leader of the session, shows Jay playing maturely with sound ideas and great musical sensibility, plus he has great chops. This album is the sort of unpretentious jazz music that deserves a place on your record shelf you like straight-ahead, uncomplicated jazz.

JAZZ TIMES MAGAZINE

The Players
Jay Corre
is respected for his integrity and consistent musicianship, Now, again determined to show that jazz has a swinging heart, free of gimmick and fad. Jay Corre returns to thrill his many fans with honesty, freshness and virtuosity for which he is justifiably acclaimed. ...Formed in the warmth of Hawk, the cool of Pres and the genius of Bird, Jay's style has enlarged to become unmistakably his own. At times fierce and driving, at others gentle and humorous- always genuine and loving- with these sides Jay once again dazzles with the mastery of his horn and material.     Freddy Cole can't hide his roots. Alert, responsive and always listening, the player and the playing are one, whether reminded of an impish Basic or a chording Jamal. Freddy has long since outgrown comparison with his famous brother Nat and brings his own good humor and swinging texture to the session.    Phil Morrison who plays Fender on these tracks, has adapted a string bass neck to that instrument with amazing results. Having traveled five years, with Freddy Cole, his anticipation and sensitivity are as evident as his daring harmonic solos . A charter member of the Sam Rivers Group and a respected composer as well, Phil's playing indicates his command.  Carl Mottola tasty and swinging, has backed acts, made the recordings and jazz gigs around Philadelphia for years. A schooled drummer, Carl can spark a big band or.a quartet with equal skill. His vast wealth of experience and versatility are most welcomed this unified musical endeavor... Sonny Rose

About the Recording...

In this carefully selected series of lovely and obscure ballads, Jay Corre exhibits his growth, maturity and virtuosity as a jazz artist. Jay reveals his love and mastery of the ballad idiom in this set and rightfully reaches a plateau equal to that of other jazz masters who have preceeded him, but whohave enjoyed greater exposure and publicity. With this lovely performance, Jay Corre justly takes his niche alongside the greats.

When I mentioned how impressed I was with the fact that he was so careful and sparing in his embelishmentsof these lovely ballads, Jay stated that is why he researched long and hard and to be so selective in his choice of materials so that his portrayal would not over shadow these beautiful and obscure songs, but enhance them with tone and substance, rather than merely a show of technique for self gratification. It is my belief that Jay Corre accomplished his mission thoroughly, allowing the listener to come away with the feeling of having been exposed to a musician who approaches his music with love and a nurturing respect for the composer's theme
